SEWING SCHOOL - #1 The Machine
Is your machine collecting dust? Has it always? Get to know either your own machine or one of our student machines, learn machine basics, how to thread, how to wind the bobbin, names of the parts, how to set tension, stitch controls, presser feet, sewing terms, and learn to sew a straight line of stitches. Consider shopping at all of the local craft stores (e.g. Michael's, Hobby Lobby, AC Moore, Joanne's) and using a coupon at each for your supplies. SUPPLIES:
  1. Sewing pins (whatever you have is fine for now; if you don't have anything purchase 1 1/4" dressmaker pins without a ball on top https://www.joann.com/search?q=dressmaker+pins)
  2. Sewing machine (indicate if you need to use ours, limited to four)
  3. Sewing machine manual (if you have it; if not, try finding a copy online)
  4. Sharp scissors (we will talk about purchasing sewing shears in the future, but they are not required for this class)
  5. One spool each of WHITE and BLACK 100% polyester thread (Mettler or Gutermann are preferred, Coats & Clark is fine, the length does not matter)
  6. Package (usually 5 count) of Schmetz Universal 80/12 sewing machine needles
